About JSM Academy

Our Why?

JSM is a music academy (non-profit company) that is geared towards providing music education to the disadvantaged community in the Gauteng Province (the school is located in Soweto). By disadvantaged community, we refer to, African communities that do not have music education as part of their formal school programme(s).

The main objective of the academy is to provide an African youth with musical knowledge and tools that will enhance their appreciation and understanding of diverse music cultures – in and around the African continent.

Our Mission

JSM Academy is dedicated to providing internationally accredited music education that blends the excellence of classical training with the richness of African musical heritage. As a nonprofit, we focus on reaching young people from underserved communities, nurturing creativity, discipline, and self-expression through high-quality instruction, performance opportunities, and mentorship.

Background

For many years, music education in the South African landscape has been associated with the “elite”. Thus making it exclusive to a select few and neglecting the marginalized majority –the socially and economically disadvantaged black, African communities. There are schools to date, in post-apartheid South African, that still do not have music as a formal subject in their academic programs/syllabi. Hence, it is essential to establish such an institution that is (will be) accessible to the targeted beneficiaries. Notably, as a means to bridge the disparities in (music) education to South African youth.

With our organization’s mission always in mind, we strive to find new strategies for dealing with this challenge.
